Stepping away from Grenada's pristine sandy shores, I visited the deserted Pearls Airport, established in 1943 and rendered non-operational after the US Invasion in October 1983, as reported by NowGrenada.

Approaching Pearls Airport, one unexpectedly drives down what used to be the runway. However, instead of aircraft, the 5,000-ft grassy airstrip has transformed into a stretch of old tires and abandoned, rusted cars adapted for drag racing.

Amidst the echoes of distant gunfire, the Grenada Military engages in a live firing exercise down the opposite end of the runway. Our path led us to a gated courtyard, seemingly encircling a site of plane wreckage.

As we walked closer—two Antonov planes, a gift from the Soviets to Cuba, now weathered skeletons exposed to the elements.

These Cold War relics stand stoically, serving as a reminder of an era, resonating with the history on the grounds of Pearls Airport.
